Getting started

Add your first thing

Tap the camera and point it at anything with a date on it — a passport, a carton of milk, an insurance letter. Lapse highlights the dates it can see. Tap the one you mean, check the name and category it has guessed, and save.

You can also type it (car insurance 14 march) or hold the microphone and say it.

Let it remind you

Say yes when Lapse asks for notification permission. Without it the app still works, but it cannot tell you anything — which is most of the point.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the countdown not match the date on the label?

Because the date on the label is usually not the day you need to act. A passport expiring in June 2027 is an autumn 2026 problem: most countries want six months of validity left, and renewals take weeks. Lapse shows you the day you must act by, with the printed date underneath.

What time do reminders arrive?

At an hour that suits the category — food at 17:00, before dinner is decided; documents and money at 09:00, when an office is open; household things at 10:00. Change it for any one thing in its detail screen, under Reminders → Time of day.

Reminders use wall-clock time, so a 09:00 reminder stays at 09:00 after you fly somewhere else.

Can I track something with no expiry date?

Yes. Turn the date off and add reminders on whatever days you like. This is how you handle "I bought twelve eggs, remind me to buy more in ten days".

Will a reminder sound if my phone is on silent?

No. When the ring/silent switch is set to silent, iOS suppresses sound and, depending on your Sounds & Haptics settings, vibration too. No app can override that switch without Apple's Critical Alerts entitlement, which is reserved for medical and public-safety use. Lapse does not claim it. The notification still arrives — it simply arrives quietly.

How do I pause something without deleting it?

Pause it from its detail screen. It stays in your list with a grey ring and a crossed-out bell, and the Paused chip at the top of the list brings all of them back when you want to find them again.

I opened it — does the date change?

Tell Lapse and it will. Many things expire from the moment they are opened rather than from the date printed on them. There is also a freezer: freezing something stops its clock entirely, and taking it out starts a short new one.

What does a subscription cost, and what happens if I don't buy one?

Lapse is completely free for your first 30 days, with nothing locked and no card required. After that a subscription unlocks adding new things, capture, widgets, iCloud sync and the archive.

Reminders you have already set keep running, forever, whether you subscribe or not. We will not silence a passport warning somebody is relying on over money.

If you do subscribe, Lapse adds the renewal date to your own list and warns you before you are charged. That is what the app is for.

How do I cancel or restore a subscription?

Cancel in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. To restore on a new device, open Lapse's Settings and tap Restore purchases.

Does my data sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Yes, through your own private iCloud database, if iCloud sync is on and both devices are signed into the same Apple Account. We never see it. You can turn sync off and the app becomes entirely offline.

Can I get my data out?

Settings exports everything as CSV or JSON, with no friction and no screen trying to talk you out of it.

Troubleshooting

Reminders are not arriving

The camera is not reading a date

Voice input does nothing

A date was read wrongly

Tap the thing and correct it. The original photograph stays attached, so you can always check the label again.

Requirements

Lapse requires iOS 26 or later and runs on iPhone and iPad. Some capture features depend on hardware support for Apple's on-device intelligence; where a feature is unavailable, Lapse falls back rather than failing.
